La mayoría de los X-Men son mutantes, una sub-especie de humanos que nacen con habilidades sobrehumanas activadas por el gen "Factor-X". Los X-Men luchan por la paz y la igualdad entre humanos normales y mutantes en un mundo donde el fanatismo anti-mutante es feroz y generalizado. 

 

Están dirigidos por Charles Xavier, también conocido como Profesor X, un poderoso telépata. Su archienemigo por excelencia es Magneto, poderoso mutante con la capacidad de manipular y controlar los campos magnéticos de la Tierra. Xavier y Magneto tienen puntos de vista y filosofías opuestas con respecto a la relación entre mutantes y humanos. Mientras que el primero trabaja por la paz y el entendimiento entre mutantes y humanos, el segundo ve a los humanos como una amenaza y cree en adoptar un enfoque agresivo contra ellos.

 

 

 

El Profesor X es el fundador de la Escuela Xavier para jóvenes Superdotados (comúnmente conocida como Mansión X), donde recluta mutantes de todo el mundo para su entrenamiento y protección. Ubicada en Salem Center, en el condado de Westchester, Nueva York, la Mansión X es el hogar y el lugar de entrenamiento de los X-Men. Los cinco miembros fundadores de los X-Men son Arcángel, Bestia, Cíclope, Iceman y Jean Grey. 

 

Conforme la saga avanzó, más personajes se sumaron a las filas del equipo. Entre los X-Men más populares se encuentran Wolverine, Tormenta, Rogue, Gambito, Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Bishop, Júbilo, Coloso, Nightcrawler y Emma Frost. Además del equipo oficial, la serie también ha generado otros equipos alternos, que giran en torno a la historia central como spin-offs. De ellos destacan los Nuevos Mutantes, X-Factor, Excalibur, Fuerza-X y Generación X. Además, algunos personajes como Wolverine, Cable y Deadpool, han alcanzado un nivel de popularidad que les han llevado a estelarizar sus propias series paralelas a la historia central de los X-Men.
